When Rockstar Games finally pulled back the curtain on Grand Theft Auto VI, the internet noticed. The Grand Theft Auto VI trailer did not just announce a game. It broke records, ended a decade of waiting, and set the tone for what could be the biggest entertainment launch ever. Here is the full story of the reveal, what the trailer showed, and where things stand now.
What the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer Revealed
The first Grand Theft Auto VI trailer arrived on December 5, 2023, after a leak forced Rockstar to publish it slightly early. Set to Tom Petty’s “Love Is a Long Road,” the trailer confirmed the rumors: we are going back to Vice City, this time as part of the fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar’s take on Florida.
The trailer introduced Lucia Caminos, the series’ first female protagonist, alongside Jason Duval. Their story looks like a modern Bonnie-and-Clyde tale set against neon-soaked streets, swamps, beaches, and social-media-saturated chaos. The footage was packed with the kind of satirical detail Rockstar is famous for, from viral-video parodies to Florida-man headlines come to life.
The Records the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer Broke
The numbers were staggering. The Grand Theft Auto VI trailer pulled in over 90 million views in its first 24 hours, making it the biggest non-music video launch in YouTube history at the time. It became the most-liked game trailer ever within days and has since accumulated hundreds of millions of views.
For context, the game had been officially confirmed as “well underway” back in February 2022, but fans had waited more than ten years since GTA V. That pent-up demand turned a 90-second video into a genuine cultural event, covered by mainstream news outlets that rarely touch gaming.
Trailer 2 and What Came Next
Rockstar followed up with a second trailer on May 6, 2025. Trailer 2 dug deeper into Jason and Lucia’s relationship, showed off more of Leonida, and gave fans their clearest look yet at the game’s world and tone. It also carried a release date at the time: May 26, 2026.
Then, in November 2025, Rockstar announced a second delay. The game is now set to launch on November 19, 2026. Rockstar updated both trailers across its official channels to carry the new date, and Take-Two Interactive’s CEO reaffirmed the November launch in an August 2026 earnings call. In late August 2026, Rockstar also premiered “An Extended Look,” roughly 27 minutes of new PlayStation 5 footage following Jason and Lucia through Vice City.
Grand Theft Auto VI Release Date
The road to launch has moved twice. The original trailer promised 2025. That window shifted to May 26, 2026, and then to the current date of November 19, 2026. Rockstar’s statement apologized for the extra wait, saying the additional months would let the team finish the game with the level of polish players expect.
A November launch slots the game right into the holiday season, which is familiar territory for Rockstar. GTA V itself launched in September 2013 and went on to become one of the best-selling games of all time, so the studio knows how to time a release.
Platforms: Where You Can Play GTA 6
Rockstar has confirmed Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no last-generation version planned, which lets the studio build specifically for current hardware. A PC version has not been announced. Given Rockstar’s history of bringing its games to PC later, as it did with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, a PC release down the line seems likely, but nothing official has been said.
Setting and Characters
Leonida is the star as much as the protagonists. The Grand Theft Auto VI trailer footage shows a dense, living Vice City surrounded by the Florida Keys-style islands, Everglades-like wetlands, and sprawling suburbs of the wider state. Social media plays a bigger role than in any previous GTA, with in-game viral videos and livestreams woven into the world.
Lucia and Jason anchor the story. Lucia’s arc begins with her in prison, and the trailers suggest a partnership built on trust issues, big scores, and the pressure of a state that wants them caught. It is the most character-driven setup the series has attempted.
The Long Road to the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer
The wait for the Grand Theft Auto VI trailer was genuinely historic. GTA V launched in 2013, and for a full decade Rockstar said almost nothing about a sequel while GTA Online became one of the most profitable entertainment products ever made. Leaks in September 2022 showed early development footage and only intensified the hunger.
When Rockstar finally confirmed the trailer date in late 2023, the announcement itself trended worldwide. The Grand Theft Auto VI trailer premiere was treated like a moon landing by the gaming press, and the numbers proved the hype was justified. Few reveals in any medium have ever commanded that level of attention.
What the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer Footage Tells Us About Gameplay
Rockstar is famously secretive, but the Grand Theft Auto VI trailer material still gives plenty away. The world looks denser than anything the studio has built: crowded beaches, packed nightclubs, busy highways, and swamps full of wildlife. Crowd density and ambient detail appear to be a major focus, with the trailers showing streets that feel genuinely alive.
The extended gameplay look confirmed that the Grand Theft Auto VI trailer footage was representative, not just cinematic trickery. Missions shown include heists, robberies, and quieter character moments, suggesting the dual-protagonist structure lets Rockstar switch tones the way it did with GTA V’s three leads. Social media is not just set dressing either. In-game phones, viral clips, and livestream culture look deeply integrated into missions and the open world.
What remains unknown is the online component. GTA Online still generates enormous revenue, so a GTA VI online mode seems inevitable, but Rockstar has said nothing official. Expect that announcement closer to launch.
Where to Watch the Official Trailer
Both trailers are available on Rockstar Games’ official website and YouTube channel, now updated with the November 19, 2026 date. With under two months to go until launch, expect Rockstar’s marketing to ramp up considerably.
